Welcome to Cortes Island

On Cortes we practice the 3 R's: reduce reuse and recycle. Here on our beautiful island we are serious about the environment and invite you to join us in our efforts to make our home as clean and green as possible.

You can put your recycling out for pick up Saturday morning or bring it to the Centre yourself. There are stations for recycling on the docks, the stores, Smelt Bay Park and every B&B on the island.

While camping or hiking please if you pack it in, pack it out.

Forgot you bathing suit, sleeping bag, kids bored with the toys/books you brought for them, need some dishes........the free store is the spot for all that and so much more.

Can’t make it to the Centre during the normal hours operation? Use the cart at the gate, put your landfill in the freezers marked landfill, your recycling on the tables in the bays and your free store stuff outside the back door of the store. Got a really big load? Call and we’ll see about getting the gate open for you.

On Cortes we have reduced our landfill by increasing our recycling. We generate a yearly average of 5124.2 kilos of landfill per week. With a population of 900 year round residents that’s 5.69 kilos a week or 0.81 kilos a day per person. The yearly average for recycling per week is 5551.2 kilos or 6.1 kg a week each and 0.88 per day. These stats are 2 years old but I know we have decreased the landfill and increased the recycling. I'll work up the numbers for 2008 and post them on this site.

Got lots of stuff? Pre sorting your load makes for quick and efficient unloading, giving you more time to shop at the free store.
